We are very pleased to inform you about some of the changes that you’ll see in Music as your child moves from Year 6 into Year 7.  Based on the experiences and feedback of Secondary students, and our collaboration with Juilliard, we are proud to share that our successful Beginner Orchestra curriculum will continue as part of your child’s weekly Music provision.

In Year 7, your son/daughter will have two timetabled Music lessons per week. One of these will be a Beginner Orchestra Class in which your son/daughter will be assigned an orchestral instrument to learn for the duration of the academic year. Whilst instruments will be provided in school for your son/daughter to use in class, it is strongly recommended that they practise regularly at home to ensure that they make progress throughout the year.

As we believe it would be unreasonable to expect parents to purchase instruments for this purpose, we will be able to loan your child a musical instrument through a deposit of 1100RMBfor the duration of the academic year. With safe return, this will allow your child to effectively rent an instrument for approximately 10RMB per week, which is significantly less than the cost of buying instruments.

On receipt of the deposit it is agreed that:

• The instrument will be taken care of properly (as modelled in class by teachers) including the assembling /disassembling and storing of the instrument.
• A suitable storage space will be made available for students, but parents will be liable to charges should the instrument be lost, stolen, or damaged.
• The student will practise regularly (as advised by the class teacher). Practice studios may be booked in school during school hours.

Please note that the rental fee of 1100RMB will be paid (in full) via Yoopay by Friday 6 September 2019.

On completion of the course:

• 500RMB will be reimbursed (on the understanding that the above conditions are met).
• 600RMB will be retained by the department (to cover the cost of basic maintenance fees of the instruments).

Payments can be made by Yoopay. Please write the payment reference as ‘Instrumental Rental Fee’ and the name and form of your child.  

START OF THE COURSE

In the very first few weeks of the school year students will have the opportunity to try a range of orchestral instruments before deciding on their ‘top four’ preferences for the year. Based on availability and teacher recommendation we will then assign a student one of their top four choices. The instrument will be released to students only after the deposit has been received in full.
