With its products and services deployed in more than 170 countries around the world, Huawei has come a long way since Ren Zhengfei founded the company in 1987. Investing heavily in the future, the company has about 76,000 staff involved in research and development alone, and as of 2017 had invested US$13.8 billion dollars in R&D. But in recent months the company has generated global cybersecurity concerns and faced widespread allegations that its telecom infrastructure equipment may contain backdoors that could enable unauthorised surveillance. Its links to the government and army have been questioned, and separately the company’s vice-chair and CFO Meng Wangzhou was arrested in Canada in December, at the request of the United States, which accuses her of violating US sanction against Iran. On the other hand, Huawei and many in China say these allegations are unwarranted and are indicative of western efforts to stymie China’s growth. As the company faces confrontations and challenges on many fronts, it is seen in some ways as representative of a wider tussle between an emerging China and the West, and emblematic of the mistrust and suspicions that often lie between them. To discuss the latest developments and what may lie ahead for the Shenzhen tech giant, and to consider the wider implications for global trade, we are joined by Joe Kelly, vice president for corporate communications at Huawei, Josh Chin of the Wall Street Journal, Shen Ji of Guanghua School of Management and technology columnist and consultant Elliot Zaagman. Moderated by Ian Lahiffe.
